Ontario, Quebec say they won’t shoulder oil sands burden

Quebec and Ontario are not "going to carry higher emission-reduction burdens", but will of course continue to soak up the equalization payments that the oil-sands projects generate for the Canadian economy.

Thanks hypocrites.

McGuinty govt talks out of both sides of the face.
Ontario's Enviro Minister really needs to talk to Ontario's Economic Dev Minister:

Maybe Alberta and Saskatchewan will not continue to carry the burden of Ontario, Quebec and the maritime provinces. What Canada really needs is a good international boundry running north and south somewhere between the lakehead and the Saskatchewan border.

Same old story. Wealth transfer schemes never get old, do they?

This has got me spitting mad. Ontario is a have not province thanks to Dalton, but they can slam another province internationally, that just happens to be a HAVE province? Scum.

How about we nationalize Quebec's hydro? That would be a good vote-getter, no?

Good idea Kelly, after Quebec Hydro buys up the Maritimes!

I wonder why the McGuinty govt had to go all the way to Copenhagen to tell Alberta they don't want OilSands manufacturing jobs...we're fine with that, tho some Ontario mfg companies may be a little nervous now.

As an Ontario resident, I am truly ashamed of the people we have elected to represent us. And the worst of it is, that we will probably continue to do so because of the massive sway that a single dysfunctional city has on provincial politics.

I wonder if there will be a contest to pick the name for the new country formed out of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and perhaps British Columbia?

Buffalo was the original name for the territory comprising Alberta and Saskatchewan. Laurier did not wan t a large province to counterbalance Ontario so he split it into 2 provinces. Buffalo or any other reasonable name os ok with me.

And some conservatives wanted Jean Charest as Prime Minister of Canada. A real smug so and so who lied his way to a majority by suppressing the bad news about the Quebec pension fund mismanagement until after the election.

As an Ontarian, I think the only thing that will save this country is a really credible western separation movement, with a fixed agenda and majority support in the three western provinces (and maybe the territories).
Now I realize that sounds a little contradictory, but it is the only way to counteract the continual blackmail of the PQ and would force all provinces back to the bargaining table.
The separation movement needs BC, not just for its resources and people, but because it becomes a gateway through which the other provinces can ship their goods west and south.
Alberta & Sask. are rich in mineral resources, grain and cattle. BC has a wealth of other agricultural products, the fishery, lumber and minerals. If those three provinces focused their marketing on Asia/US/South America, they wouldn't really need Eastern Canada, and BC would become a maritime shipping giant in the process. That arrangement would have far more credibility as a stand-alone nation than Quebec ever would.
At that point the Western Nation could use the same blackmail techniques as Quebec to force a re-negotiation of confederation, elimination of transfer payments,a proper distribution of seats in the house, an elected senate etc. etc.
Without the west, and with the likes of the current eastern provincial governments the rest of Canada would rapidly sink to second world status.
Facing the economic realities might also wake up the majority of Quebecers to the fallacy of their self-centered approach to national politics.

It is fashionable for Liberals to cry on the international stage if they can score points back at home with their base. Both Liberal premiers have serious issues regarding scandals at home and this provides an opportunity to distract the media and voters at home by bashing Alberta.
QC lost billions on their Pension Fund and have a problem with construction contracts.
I am afraid how much money we have given to consultants in Ontario for nothing. (Sponsorship Scandal Ontario style)
The Polls via HST show no support for a Green tax.
This will be easy to campaign on, vote coalition for more taxes or give the CPC a majority.
The NDP will be wiped out in many rural ridings for their desire to impose the Green Tax and fake HST protest.
The Liberals are not really a factor, just a sick dying beast in need of a merciful end. (That the next election will provide)

That is why the coalition won't pull the plug.

No talk of separation, we are not whining Quebecers looking for handouts.
And Harper will get blamed, we need him in the big chair.
Separation after preparation...

We need action shifting all of our resources thru western (and north/south) channels.
Effectively reducing any dependance we may have on the East.

We also need to increase our manufacturing base. There is no better time to do that.
Brad Wall will be instrumental, and I'm thinking Wild Rose will be too.
Canada's Action Plan is perfectly written to give Western Canada a hand up with these initiatives.

You hit that nail on the head CC.
It makes us weary tho.
Western Canada must be quiet about separating UNTIL, as is inevitable, the Liberals win back federal govt.

By then, Western Canada should have gone a long way on the Gateway initiatives, like the pipeline flowing West (environmentalists shut down plans last year for Enbridge to expand the Eastern flowing pipeline,
in hind sight,
we thank you, flowing our dirty oil west to an Asian/US market is much much better for the West)
